Located thousands of miles from the nearest continent, our island ecosystem relies entirely on vulnerable global supply chains and volatile tourism infrastructure. Today, the State of Hawaii imports approximately 90% of its daily food supply. In the event of a natural disaster, economic embargo, or shipping disruption, the island carries less than a five-day reserve of food. At the same time, local families face some of the highest electricity, gas, and housing costs in the United States.
True sustainability cannot be achieved through passive awareness or dependence on external subsidies. True sustainability is an active, daily practice of kuleana (responsibility)—and our schools are the perfect laboratories to ignite this transformation.
Named after the deep ancestral roots of the kalo (taro) plant, Hālau Hāloa seamlessly blends ancient Hawaiian resource management with cutting-edge Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) design. We are turning public school campuses into living innovation centers. By empowering youth to build decentralized food, water, and energy systems, we are proving that a return to self-sufficiency can help our communities move beyond basic survival to long-term abundance.

The Kahuku High and Intermediate School (KHIS) Green Team is leading a localized movement to turn the ideals of aloha ʻāina into measurable community infrastructure. Serving a richly diverse student body across a 26-mile geographic span along Oahu’s North Shore—from Kaʻaʻawa to Sunset Beach—our program transforms ecological challenges into profound academic and vocational milestones.
Because approximately 46% of our student body comes from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, classifying KHIS as a Title 1 school, our sustainability frameworks are built to be affordable, scalable, and immediately practical for household adoption.
The Hawaii State Department of Education, in conjunction with Hawaii Energy, the Hawaii Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, and Jack Johnson’s Kōkua Hawaii Foundation, honored KHIS as one of only six schools in the state to be selected as a national Green Ribbon School.

Operational Cost Reductions: By launching a campus-wide waste diversion framework, our students intercept cafeteria food scraps and organic waste, turning them into high-grade thermophilic compost. This has drastically lowered the frequency of commercial garbage pickups, saving the school system thousands of dollars in annual hauling fees.
Nutritional Reclamation: The edible school yards and agricultural plots created by our students use this nutrient-rich, regenerated soil to cultivate organic fruits, vegetables, and traditional kalo, bringing fresh, pesticide-free produce directly into campus programs and local homes.
Green-Collar Academic Pathways: Ecological literacy is woven directly into core secondary education, offering credit-bearing, career-focused courses including Natural Resource Management, Agricultural Education, and AP Environmental Science.
Originally launched as a rapid-response solution to food security vulnerabilities exposed by global supply chain shocks, the Garden Tower Project aims to completely decentralize agricultural production. Our primary objective is to replace reliance on fragile corporate shipping lines and processed, low-nutrition food handouts with immediate, independent backyard abundance.

Ultimate Architectural Versatility: Because these portable systems require zero native topsoil and take up minimal space, they allow families to cultivate organic, non-GMO, and heirloom crops directly on apartment lānais, in compact backyards, or completely indoors under grow lights.
Comparative Agricultural Science: Our students don't just grow food; they manage data. Students operate comparative research stations behind Building Z to map performance, growth rates, and nutrient profiles across traditional soil towers, hydroponics, aquaponics, and advanced fogponic setups.
True sustainability means looking at industrial commercial waste as raw raw manufacturing assets. Our students actively collect discarded food-grade 55-gallon plastic drums, scrap bathtubs, old commercial casing liners, and raw wooden pallets from local businesses, upcycling them into fully functional, family-sized residential aquaponics loops.
Closed-Loop Protein & Produce: Powered by micro-photovoltaic solar setups and vertical windmills crafted from split plastic drums, these closed-loop systems cultivate freshwater tilapia alongside nutrient-hungry organic greens. Because the water is continuously filtered by the plants and pumped back to the fish, these systems use 10 times less water than standard dirt farming.
Bicycle-Wheel Wind Pumps: To eliminate the barrier of expensive monthly electricity bills, students design custom mechanical water lifters using old bicycle wheels outfitted with handmade wind blades, capturing the North Shore's reliable trade winds to aerate our tanks.
In collaboration with local construction firms, alternative energy engineering companies, and regional military sustainability commands, Hālau Hāloa is developing completely mobile tiny homes built onto standard 8.5' x 24' trailers. Because these structures are built on wheels, they do not require permanent county building permits.
Integrated Independent Infrastructure: Designed to be surrounded by student-built aquaponics loops and vertical growing walls, each housing prototype features exterior rain-catchment barrels, charcoal and reverse osmosis water filtration systems, solar-powered cross-ventilation fans, solar-composting toilets, and a simple greywater treatment system using local reeds and eco-friendly detergents. This project provides an accessible, substance-free, emergency-ready housing blueprint tailored specifically for low-income families and homeless Hawaii veterans.
Inspired by grassroots conservationists, each student in our Environmental Resource Management cohort takes absolute ownership of a specific ecological challenge facing the Koʻolauloa moku (district). Every student outlines their project using a dedicated science board and documents their findings in broadcast-quality educational videos.

Respond (Edible School Yards): We transformed a campus lot previously overrun by invasive weeds into an intensive edible school yard, implementing six large banana circles and circular mandala gardens to grow produce for students who cannot afford school lunches.
Reconcile (Cultural Nutrition): Students are optimizing their personal nutrition and honoring ancestral lineages by participating in cultural challenges—such as replacing processed, imported starches with traditional paʻiʻai (freshly pounded kalo) to stabilize blood sugar and improve metabolic health.
Redefine (Decentralized Agriculture): Youth are designing and installing micro-scale backyard vertical gardens and aquaponics loops directly next to family homes to establish a continuous source of fresh protein and vegetables.
Refocus (Local Purchasing Power): We actively direct our community's purchasing power away from imported goods and toward regional agriculturalists by supporting local farmers' markets across BYU-Hawaii, Waimea Valley, and Kahuku Elementary.

Rethink (Digital Classrooms): We are systematically cutting down paper, ink, and printer cartridge waste on campus by moving our student workflows and administrative operations entirely to cloud-based digital education tools.
Reorganize (Material Auditing): Students learn to audit their personal belongings, keeping only what is essential and actively donating, recycling, or re-purposing the rest to minimize local consumer waste.
Repurpose (Give-and-Take Exchanges): On Saturday mornings, we host a volunteer-run "Give-and-Take" exchange center in Laie. Community members can pick up 10 home items for free in exchange for performing 30 minutes of local community service.
Repair (Fix-It Clinics): We run hands-on clinics to teach community members how to fix broken household goods and tools rather than discarding them into our island’s rapidly filling landfills.

Hālau Hāloa operates proudly as a branch of the Koʻolauloa Educational Alliance Corporation (KEAC). KEAC holds the distinction of being the first federal School-to-Work program in Hawaii to successfully transition into an independent non-profit corporation.
